Day 35. Plymouth to Wembury

My aching back kept me awake and was a bit worrying because I knew I would be carrying the rucksack for the next two weeks.
Felt better after half an hour of stretches and exercises.

Walked up to the station to say goodbye to Maggie and to meet my daughter, Hannah, from the train.
Got some supplies in town and had lunch at the Crown and Anchor down by the ferry.
I didn't want to leave the pub as I was enjoying the music so much.
It was as if they'd stolen my iPod.
But we had to get going and caught the ferry across to Jennycliff.

Couldn't miss this sign just after the parks at Jennycliff

Made slow progress because it was a sweltering day.
Hannah went for a dip at the first opportunity near the Hi De Hi camp at Bovisand Bay while I got some air to my feet.
Fortunately the going was fairly easy and provided a bit of relief for the aching back and feet.

The Great Mewstone

Stopped to have our sandwiches at Wembury Point with the Great Mewstone just offshore.
It's now a bird sanctuary but an infamous local resident was once transported there, rather than Australia, for seven years.
He took a liking to it and remained there to raise his family.

The gang of four turned up again and there was discussion about the logistics of getting across the River Yealm and the River Erme due to tomorrow's ferry times and tide times.
To be honest, I hadn't given it much thought as we were camping and didn't need to be at a particular place at any particular time but could see that we would have to get ourselves organised or we wouldn't get anywhere.

The River Yealm

Walked almost to the Yealm ferry and then back inland to find a campsite.
We must have looked a sorry mess when we eventually arrived because the owner, Jim, immediately got a drink for us and chatted with us in his lovely rich Devon brogue.
Pilgrim's Rest was a proper old school campsite where the men's shower (singular) delivered cold water only, even though Jim gave us 20p each for the hot water.
But that was okay as that was perfect for a scorching hot day.

Went into the village for a beer and a bite to eat at the Odd Wheel (the Oddy) and get some phone power.
