The cumulative ascent of the South West Coast path is 3.75 X Mount Everest.
I feel like I've climbed it twice already and I've only been walking for six days.
All the gear was still sopping wet this morning so we had a trip to the launderette first thing to use the dryers.
The path around here is shared with the Tarka Trail and uses a disused railway so I thought we'd be in for an easier day.
The path was covered with leaves, twigs, branches and tree debris, testament to yesterday's severe weather.
The rain had eased off but the wind was blowing as strong as ever which was handy because it was on our backs and pushing us along towards Barnstaple.
Being jet propelled we reached the town in no time and decided to take the short cut using the new by-pass bridge rather than walk all the way into town and back up the other side of the river.
The wind at the top of the bridge was incredible and we had to hang on to the rail all the way or get blown under the passing traffic.
Pay back for having the wind behind us heading east was that we were now facing into it heading west.
The strong wind kept the clouds scudding across to urgent business in Somerset and Wiltshire.
Progress was slow and walking on tarmac all day was hard on the feet.
Stopped for lunch at Fremington Quay, arrived in Instow mid afternoon and felt like my feet were on fire. 'Literally on fire' as Harry Rednapp might say.
Went down to the quay to check the ferry times to get across to Appledore and was disappointed to see it had been cancelled for the previous two days because of the high winds and doesn't run at all on the morning tide.
So we stayed in Instow and would have to have a rethink for tomorrow.
Not many photos today because there's water in my phone from yesterday's storm.
